Wisconsin - Milwaukee

Milwaukee

Old St. Mary's Church is older than the State of Wisconsin, dating to 1847. The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist's spire lurks in the background.

The 1879 Mackie (left) and 1876 Mitchell (right) buildings are very close siblings, both constructed by one Alexander Mitchell. He came from Scotland, turned an insurance company into a major bank, almost became governor, turned a dead railroad into a major one, and together with his sons, is the namesake of everything Mitchell in the Milwaukee area, including the airport (his grandson modernized the Air Force and got the B-25 bomber named Mitchell). Most importantly, he founded the Milwaukee Curling Club.
The Mitchell Building manages to be more incredible than its builder.

The Mackie Building started life as the Chamber of Commerce Building.
