Saskatchewan - Moose Jaw/Highway 2 - N

Moose Jaw, City Hall and north

Would you trust this guy? If so, stop on the south side of Hochelaga Street W.

Two of Moose Jaw's many murals can be found along Athabasca Street, heading east from 2nd Avenue NW toward Main Street.

You'll also find St. Andrew's United Church (originally Presbyterian) on Athabasca Street, dating to 1912.

Main Street (Highway 2) is adorned with old-fashioned lamps and old buildings. Eaton's Store (#500-#510) dates to 1928 and was the department store's first location in Saskatchewan.

Another United Church, Zion started out as Methodist in 1907. It's on the east side of Main Street at Stadacona Street.

Various old buildings along Stadacona Street west of Main Street: #30, #53, #70, #79. Even numbers are on the north side, odd numbers on the south. #53 was in the process of being restored, not abandoned.

The city court house, built in 1909, is on the northeast corner of Ominica Street and 1st Avenue NW. The Slade Apartments (last photo) are just north of there.

One of the more permanent murals adorns #83 Ominica Street W opposite the court house. The next one is on #55.

A pair of 300-block Main Street buildings: the 1919 Bellamy Block, seen from Ominica Street (3 photos), and the 1912 Hammond Building on the northwest corner of Fairford Street.

The northeast corner of Fairford and Main Streets features two old buildings, the 1926 James Richardson & Sons Building (home of Moose Jaw's first radio station, CJRM) and the adjacent 1912 bank.

This must have been the centre of downtown, because all four corners have interesting old buildings. The former Merchants Bank of Canada was built on the southeast corner in 1919.

Saving the best for last, here's the 1914 City Hall on the southwest corner, which started life as a post office and Federal government building until 1963. The first photo faces east on Fairford Street, including the Merchants Bank in the background.

The police department was built along Fairford Street behind City Hall in 1985 but in a compatible style.

Architectural details, and what else but one more mural, on the west side of the police annex. Funny, that doesn't look like a police vehicle.
