Adelaide - North Adelaide and
West, South, Dequetteville Terraces

This unlikely grouping of photos is brought to you in lieu of calling it "Misc. Adelaide Photos."

Heading north on King William Road toward North Adelaide, this is the Adelaide Oval (cricket and AFL grounds) over a gazebo in Elder Park.

The first building you can see in North Adelaide is the Anglican St. Peter's Cathedral (1878-1902).

There are plenty of old church buildings on the east side of King William Road. The one featured from the 2nd photo on is the 1881 St. Barnabas Theological College.

Also (tangentially) related to the church, the 1850 Cathedral Hotel is on the corner of Kermode Street. It was refurbished in 2014 and no longer looks quite like this.

These are all parts of the Adelaide Children's Hospital. The (Thomas) Elder Lab dates to 1895, the Allan Campbell Buildings date to 1897, and the Angas Building to 1893.

The 1883 Huntsman Hotel, renamed to Archer Hotel by the time I got there. It's at the corner of Archer Street and O'Connell Street (the northern continuation of King William Road that runs through downtown North Adelaide).

Another hotel, the Oxford, which started life at the corner of Tynte Street as the Princess Royal Hotel in 1859.

Last hotel, built at the southwest corner of O'Connell Street at Barton Terrace in 1869.

Well, this is clearly the 1847 Newmarket Hotel, and it's on Port Rd. as it comes to West and North Terraces.

The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute opened just after I took these November 2013 photos from Port Rd.

This 1880s South Terrace building has gone by a number of names and owners. When I was there, it was Annesley College, a primary and secondary school for girls. Now it's Annesley Junior School, a primary school (age 2 through year 6) for all children. It started out as the Patchell Building.

Swinging around to Dequetteville Terrace (East Terrace exists but was never part of the Highway A21 ring route), this is the 1883 Hackney Lodge (née Hotel). It was apparently notoriously awful inside, but it's been rehabbed.

I could not discern the provenance of the old stone house on the northwest corner of Dequetteville Terrace at Rundle Street/Road. The 100+ year-old Marshall House is on the northeast corner and also has an unclear history.

Let's close on a fun one. This "sculpture" was on the southwest corner of Dequetteville Terrace and Rundle Road. The intersection was redone and this pavement is now grass. No twees.
