Queensland - Queen's Gardens, Brisbane

Queen's Gardens, Brisbane

I'm going to start this page on the "wrong" side of the old Treasury Building, first opened in 1889 (with construction continuing in parts), looking east from Brisbane Square. "Audax at fidelis" translates to "bold but faithful."

Some architectural details as I round the corner and head down George Street toward the Queen's Gardens proper. I don't need to translate this banner.

Turning the corner once more to the Queen's Gardens side of the Treasury.

Completing the loop by walking along the south (William Street) frontage. At the top of that entrance is the Order of the Garter escutcheon featuring the saying "Honi soit qui mal y pense," French for "Shame to he who thinks evil."

The Queen whose Gardens these are, in detail. She disapproves of you.

A lesser statue, the Air Force Memorial, featuring an eagle.

The Old State Library, originally the Queensland Museum in 1879, stands on the south side of the Gardens, fronted by a royal poinciana.

Some more Old State Library photos from along William Street.

To its right in the above photos is the statue of Thomas Joseph Ryan, former Premier of Queensland.

The 1905 Land Administration Building, starting in the Gardens and then turning down George Street to the other side at Stephens Lane.

To end it all, the southwest corner of the Land Administration Building from the southeast corner of the Queen's Gardens.
