New York - Harriman State Park

Harriman State Park

Looking north from Torne Valley Road (Rockland CR 95), the mountain rising ahead is Ramapo Torne, marking the southern beginning of Harriman State Park.

Heading north from the end of Johnsonville Road, these photos start along the white trail once that road ends (see the link at bottom). I came mainly for the interesting rock formations, but since it was early spring, you get some nice waterflows.

Coming back south on the well-marked blue trail toward Pound and Dater Mountains, I found the best views unobstructed by trees. The interesting hills here are the Ramapo Mountains to the east, along the southeast edge of the park and the northwest edge of civilization.

If you come toward the mountains from the south instead of the north, you get to climb Almost Perpendicular between these rocks. It's really not that steep.

I believe this tree has formed a strike zone for you to play ball. It's conveniently about 60 feet from the trail but since trees are tall, you're aiming about 20 feet up.

As I walked south toward Dater Mountain County Park, I rounded a corner and there was sound. Weird sound that suddenly died as it heard the leaves rustle under my feet, then picked up again for the first half of this video. I found a second lake with the same sound, and that's the second half. If this isn't baby birds squawking for food, you tell me what it is.

Pretty rocks and waters continue south to the County Park and its bright blazes. I circled back up to the orange trail's exit at Johnsonville Road and found the spring melt in the last photo. For a closeup, clickle that trickle.

Can't think of a better closing than my last photo from the hike.
