New Mexico - US 66 - Santa Rosa to Tucumcari

Former US 66 between Santa Rosa and Tucumcari

Starting off looking southeast, and gradually more east. I'll come back to that interesting mountain later.

Photos to the north.

More southerly photos across Interstate 40.

Continuing east, looking to the north.

Another view to the south, still looking like it did before. Even with eight other photos between, only 2 minutes have elapsed since the last southward photos.

Once again, these are all to the north.

Back to the south side of the car, and back to the stripey mountain. I still haven't solved the mystery, but the views are a lot clearer now that I passed the last ridge.

Panning from north to east.

The northeastern scenery gets more colorful when I cross Interstate 40.

Looking south, mystery explained - partly. I can at least see that the stripes have resolved into dirt piles, but I don't know why they're there. I assume they're manmade, but what purpose do they serve? Is something dug into the top of the mountain at regular intervals, and if so, why not cart the dirt back down?

Looking south or even slightly west at I-40 Exit 311.

To the northeast, entering Montoya.

Showing off more of that southeastern color.

One last look to the north.

I really like the idea of a large, thriving tree in the middle of the desert.

Finishing off with a flurry of southward photos.
