New Mexico - US 66 - Cibola Co.

Former US 66 in Cibola County

Starting off with scenery to the south.

Here's what's on the north side.

Into a very stripey (if shallow) canyon, layered with red and white sandstone. Given that most of New Mexico is white sand while most of Arizona is red, it's clear that that boundary has shifted in the past.

Looking north and panning from left to right.

Starting north, turning east, and heading around a rock formation that Interstate 40 cuts right through just to the south. By taking the easy way out, Interstate traffic misses out on almost all of this scenery, especially the stripey canyony bits that are my favorite.

To the north at the rock cut area.

Looking south at the boring Interstate.

Ending with northern scenery on the old road east of Mesita. It's beautiful and barely traveled, but watch your tires. You can see the road photos from this stretch at the link below.
