Kansas - Topeka

Topeka

Jayhawk Tower, formerly the Jayhawk Hotel, 7th Street at Jackson Street downtown.

Speaking of downtown, the Capitol is where it's at, only a block or two from the cool bird sign (that's how everyone should navigate). The archer dude on top is actually nowhere near original to the dome, but was erected in 2002. It is indeed a native Kansa, named Ad Astra after the state motto, and pointing at the North Star.

Monroe Elementary School was one of four African American-only schools in Topeka until 1954, when several parents attempted to enroll their children in otherwise white-only schools. Thus began the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case that ended legal segregation. It is now a National Park, and the building is fortunate it lived beyond its life as a school long enough to be so designated.
