Kansas - Emporia

Emporia

This was originally the house of Preston Plumb, founder of Emporia and later US Senator. His wife added pillars and a ballroom, and their estate brought the carriage house forward (that's the stone building) for additional rooms. See, at that time the entire estate was donated as a women's shelter, which it remains to this day.

Continuing west on 6th Avenue (US Route 50) to Commercial Street and the old Citizens National Bank Building, built in 1923 and still housing (in part) a bank.
Just a bit farther west, the former high school and junior high are across from each other at Constitution Street and Congress Street. The junior high has names of importance from multiple walks of life - Washington, Lincoln, and Franklin, but also Horace Mann and Mark Twain.

Back to downtown and heading up Commercial Street to the old Granada Theatre, with photos of buildings alternating sides until there.
