Iowa - Amana

Amana

Starting from the far east side of town, a dead-end off US Highway 151. All of the original buildings look pretty much the same: wide-set, multi-story brick structures. If you don't see that in the second photo, keep looking for the bricks. From observation, the weathered wood is still fairly old, just not original.

In many cases, there were more modern additions to the original buildings, either to provide more space or to change the function (in the latter case, from a house to a hotel). These are usually done with wood or vinyl, but occasionally you see stone that makes you question what's new or old.

Coming out onto 220th Trail, the main street through the town, though just a spur off the through route.

Not all of the buildings are businesses or museums. People still do live in each town in the Amana Colonies, even tourist-trap Amana.

The Ox Yoke Inn (south side of the street) started with an original brick building and added the wooden siding. The Little Red Wagon started with an old wooden building and added an old metal weathervane.

The rest of the buildings on the way out to Highway 151. The Heritage Museum is the first building you see entering town.

Across the highway, 220th Trail turns into Highway 220 (not a coincidence) and skirts the north side of Lily Pond.
