The first few miles of the road are wide and smooth, but with beautiful cuts into the mountainside.

Eastbound approaching Keanae, rounding Honomanu and Nua`ailua Bays. The peninsula in the foreground is inhabited. For the last two photos, I've turned inland in Keanae, and together they form a panorama from northeast to south.


Water, water, everywhere, from the large and salty to the really tiny, and that's only the first two photos.


As seen on my bridge photos page (linked at bottom), much of the water in northeastern Maui has been diverted out of the streams and into farms. That leaves streambeds like this with barely a trickle instead of gushing rapids.


A pair of waterfalls frame a unique tree and (yawn) yet another stunning ocean view.


One of the most approachable waterfalls along the Hana Highway, this one can actually be accessed by a narrow, slippery hillside path and perhaps swum in. With the amount of rain falling at the time, I was swimming anyway. Looking around this area, car parked for the worst of the storm, there's a rock waterfall that's clearly a remnant of an ancient lava flow, and then some pools formed in that rock.


One of the only bends in the road that lets you see all the way up the slopes of Haleakala. Just kidding - the mountain is over 10,000 feet tall and rises well above the clouds. This is just a lesser peak on the side.
