Former US 66 east of Barstow - desert rocks

I gather that one of the traditions of US 66 travelers who bravely leave the Interstate in the heart of the eastern California desert is to leave a memorial in arranged rocks on the old railroad grade along the north side of the road. I was unable to gather where all the white rocks are coming from, unless they keep getting reused from former names that get ravaged by winds and the passage of time. Some people bring spray paint to enhance visibility. Some people, like Craig, have no concept of upper and lower case. Some, like Nate, have no idea how to spell their own name (that's "NAET" in the third photo to the right). Finally, some seem to have access to much larger rocks than the others.
