California - Old US 101

Former US 101 south of Los Angeles

Photos face north unless otherwise stated.

National City Boulevard into its namesake city, at a 1941 theater whose use (1990s) and sign (2018) are both now gone.

Into San Diego on Main Street until it ends, then toward the modern dome of the San Diego Central Library on 14th Street.

The 1911 San Diego Electric & Gas Co. building is on the southwest corner of Kettner Boulevard and Broadway.

The 1915 Santa Fe Depot is on the northwest corner.

Oddly, Little Italy is served by India Street.

Down through Torrey Pines State Reserve to Torrey Pines State Beach. The distant view from Solana Beach gets as far as San Clemente over the Pacific Ocean.

The ones you can't place as easily: Coastal Helix art installation in a roundabout leaving Carlsbad, then into Oceanside.

The old road disappears by Camp Pendleton so I find myself on Interstate 5. San Onofre Mountain is ahead, the left half of the silhouette from Solana Beach, and photos pan to the east.

Another pan from north to east.

Last licks from I-5.

On a dead-end segment of old road at San Onofre Beach, photos look east and pan south.

Now into Los Angeles County, El Camino Real becomes Coast Highway and leaves San Clemente at the foot of Boca de la Playa.

Just before the south end of Route 1, here's a view of Dana Point to the northwest.
