As I explain on the Mississippi page (linked at bottom), these mound sites held ceremonial significance and also served to physically elevate important houses and places in the village.


Here's Oakville. I didn't go in that far but I nabbed a few historical signs and a couple of archetypal mounds near the entrance.


A lot more mounds in Moundville (off AL Route 69) and state historical sign with pretty neon rivers. In sheer number this seems to eclipse even Mississippi's Winterville Mounds.
