South Carolina Roads - US 17 - S. of Charleston

south of Charleston

Mmm, demountable button copy. US 17 SB went to the right, where SC 170 now proudly stamps it out, and the left was not just US 17, but US 17 ALT. As you will see, there's an ALT north of here, so maybe SC decided to pare the number of ALT 17's down. This photo is courtesy Lou Corsaro, because I was too impatient to U-turn for my own version.

Up to Ridgeland; the last photo is shared with US 278 WB.

All remaining photos are courtesy Lou Corsaro except for one.

Opposite direction from my last photo.

Assorted old northbound shields north of Ridgeland, approaching the I-95 multiplex.

Now southbound from US 21 onto the other end of the multiplex with the same type of old shields.

Mathematician's challenge: Multiply each side by the time you get to the split, and pick the one with the lowest third digit. CARRY THE THREE! These are just north of the above southbound shields; the second photo (right side of the road) is mine.

US 17 SB/21 NB (let's call it westbound) and then at the eastern end of the wrong-way US 17/21 multiplex, with shields that would make NJDOT weep for joy.

Work is underway in 2008 between SC 64 and US 21 to widen US 17 to four lanes and add a second carriageway. These photos follow the work SB on both sides of the current highway.

SB heading south from Charleston, passing an old sign whose arrows are clearly behind the times, judging by the newer shields, and coming to another black-background 17 shield on a crowded overhead in Jacksonboro.
