Rhode Island Roads - RI 403 - Construction

RI 403 construction photos

These photos are now outdated - see the RI 403 freeway page. For editing purposes, it's easier to keep all the captions in the present tense - they were accurate as of 2006.

As RI 403 becomes a freeway, the access to and from US 1 keeps changing as well (especially since US 1 was just reconstructed on a new, wider bridge over 403 to allow for the freeway). You used to be able to reach US 1 by turning right, but now access comes from farther back, and the former turn is now a one-way street the wrong way. Nice try, though. Technically, this intersection is still the beginning of RI 403.

WB on Roger Williams Way, where the RI 403 freeway will eventually end. For now, traffic can exit onto the future RI 403, but can't make it all the way to 403.

Glimpses of the eastbound, unopened lanes, east of US 1. Once the freeway is fully opened, there will be three WB lanes here, with only the right lane exiting for Davisville Rd, and there will be EB lanes flying over Roger Williams Way to end.

Looking westward along the under-construction freeway as the photographer (me) is forced off toward Davisville Road, which to the west becomes the current two-lane RI 403 (and was the original road through the area).

The overpass is already constructed over the Roger Williams Way extension that connects with US 1. This is the same road that I mentioned in the first photo as having been converted to one-way only from Gate Road, but recently, RWW was rerouted to end at US 1 in a modified T intersection.

The future RI 403 EB-US 1 SB ramp in the first photo, and the EB underpass of US 1 in the second photo, along with stanchions on US 1 for future signs directing traffic to RI 403.

Eastbound on current RI 403 at US 1, showing the entire US 1 interchange and the future WB underpass, respectively.

Looking westward, these will eventually carry the EB signs for the US 1 exit.

West of the US 1 area, part of the expressway has already been paved, with structures and barriers installed.

The bright blue four-lane railroad overpass in the vicinity of Old Baptist Road, and the current northern end of freeway construction.

As of January 2007, RI 4 construction was serious enough to start to change the routings of RI 403 and RI 402, and the ramps linking all three highways. This is RI 403 WB where it basically ends.
