Oregon Roads - US 101 - N of Tillamook

US 101 north of Tillamook

All photos are northbound unless otherwise stated.

This railroad bridge keeps me company to the west as I cross the Kilchis River.

Old stone rail along Tillamook Bay, then a pedestrian overpass masquerading as a covered bridge over US 101 and the parallel railroad at Twin Rocks Friends Camp.

North from OR 53 to Nehalem. Seaside is now 22 miles from OR 53 instead of 24 miles. By 2090, it will have made it all the way here on its way south.

US 101's second tunnel heads under Arch Cape.

Sunset Blvd. EB ends facing west. After leaving Cannon Beach, it has a "trumpet" interchange with US 101, but I put that in quotes because it intersects Elk Creek Rd. on the east side of the interchange. By the time Sunset Blvd. has looped back around west, it needs full connectivity with US 101 for Elk Creek's traffic. The EB-SB and SB-WB ramps still pay, removing a lot of left turns from this intersection.

From Sunset Blvd. up to Neawanna Creek, an earlier (1930) Conde McCullough design.

US 101 crosses the New Youngs Bay Bridge, built in 1964 to replace the Old Youngs Bay Bridge (1921) that's now on Business US 101. The Astoria-Megler Bridge in the distance is even newer, opened in 1966 to replace the old ferry to Washington.

Now that you've driven across Youngs Bay in photos, click to drive in a video, also northbound.

More Astoria-Megler views and then US 101 turns onto the bridge approach from the western beginning of US 30.

The tolls on the Astoria-Megler Bridge were taken out as a holiday present in December 1993 but the skeleton curiously remains. US 101 loops over itself to head uphill toward the bridge, so my NB pass through the toll structure is facing south.

Matching SB shields coming off the bridge.

Across the tallest part of the bridge and down to the long, low causeway section, ending with a view east along the Columbia River.

Most of the Columbia is in Oregon, so photos on this page continue north until I finally spy the border sign on the next truss.
