US 101, Reedsport to Waldport

All photos are northbound unless otherwise stated.

Heading north from Reedsport on the 1936 Umpqua River Bridge, and then some views to the east of the parallel 1914 railroad bridge. US 101 can claim the last swing bridge on an Oregon state highway.

Finishing the ride across the bridge and its under-construction swing span, the only steel in a sea of concrete at road level. North of the river and its secondary channel beyond Bolon Island, a spur rail line starts to follow the road to its west, hence the old crossbucks.

One photo crossing Tahkenitch Creek, and then the rest are devoted to the 1936 Siuslaw River Bridge. Like the Umpqua River, this one is a Conde McCullough design.

Why is the Devils Elbow tunnel signed as a historical bridge? Because it lets out onto the 1932 Cape Creek Bridge.

A rainy look back south across bridge to tunnel.

As I loop under the north end of the bridge from east to west, you can appreciate how unusual this double-layered arch approach is. Guess who designed it? Conde McCullough deserves more than one memorial bridge named after him.

Heading back east under the Cape Creek Bridge from Heceta Head Lighthouse.

You can guess who designed the 1931 Big Creek bridge. The Bureau of Public Roads later became the FHWA.

Finishing crossing, then a look west in profile from Big Creek Rd.

One last bridge from our favorite designer, the 1931 Tenmile (or Ten Mile) Creek crossing.
