New York Roads - Ulster Co.

Ulster County

Lucas Ave., CR 1.

Tongore Rd., CR 5 (SB).

A nearly pristine (minus half a sticker) example of the defunct style of county shield, courtesy Greg Faulkner. Everyone's switching over to the boring pentagons (in some cases, especially ugly and off-spec, which is interesting in all the wrong ways), including the many counties with outline diamond shields. Collect them while you can.

Heading NB from Orange CR 23. Below this shield is County Highway 13A. Yep, county highways are different from county routes, catalogued for maintenance purposes. It begs the question why two systems are necessary.

A three-digit County Highway follows CR 26 (NB here).

Briggs Hwy. EB (and looking south) nearing Ellenville.

Albany Post Rd. NB from CR 7, and Mill Dam Rd. EB in Stone Ridge.

More old signs, on NY 375 SB.

The scene from Butterville Rd. north of NY 299.

Butterville Rd. crosses underneath the Mohonk Private Road, so private I did not dare disobey the No Trespassing signs. That, and there were people on the other side. It was built on an old railroad bed, making this a decades-old concrete trestle. The clearance signs are clearly not up to any standards because this isn't even a county road.

Tuyten Bridge Rd. WB in Lake Katrine and Lake Katrine Rd. north from there. Nothing else old in the area besides Lake Rd. itself (former US 9W) where Tuyten Bridge Rd. ends.

Classic crossing signs at the corner of Washington Ave. and Schwenk Dr. in Kingston.

River Rd. northwest of NY 208 entering this town, courtesy John Krakoff.
