New York Roads - Long Island Motor Pkwy. - Nassau Co. - Willis Ave., Williston Park; Mineola

Long Island Motor Parkway
Nassau County - Willis Ave. in Williston Park; Mineola

The first section of Parkway after Albertson is easy to access - you can park right on it off of Willis Ave. where it goes from four lanes to two. It is a short but decently well preserved section back to another parking lot. Next comes the Roslyn Rd. section, as linked below. After the golf course and south of NY 25B (Hillside Ave.), there are large backyards along Charles St. that are part of the old Parkway right of way, but good luck getting access (and please do not trespass without permission). You can see right of way along Betty Lane under the power lines and across NY 25 (Jericho Tpk.) into a parking lot. The most interesting sections are off of Donna Lane to the south. Evelyn Rd., Hill St., and Raff Ave. all dead-end in the Parkway right of way, and all have something to see. You have to cross to the other side (use Westbury Ave. to the south) and park on Dow Ave. to walk an intact stretch of Parkway - head to the end and turn right through the fence gate that should be open.
Although the Willis Ave. and Mineola sections are separated by a good distance and have the Roslyn Rd. section between them, they are grouped on the same page for economy of space.
Willis Ave., Williston Park

Looking west from Willis Ave. on Highway Dr., which is a private road leading to the North Hempstead Highway Dept. Because of that fence, which I was not going to climb, you don't get more photos from this driveway. The entire length is the old Parkway, though any remnants appear to have been wiped away.

Heading east from Willis Ave. through the front parking lot. Technically, cars could drive on the original Long Island Motor Parkway and head to the rear parking lot, the only place in Long Island where the original Parkway is intact and driveable.

I wonder if that fire hydrant is old enough to have been installed when the Parkway existed, perhaps because of its proximity to other development. The "Temporarily" fence sign is certainly as old as the fence and I guess now it's Permanently.

Continuing eastward to the second, locked fence and peering eastward from there. The next segment of the Parkway (off Roslyn Rd., linked at bottom) is just beyond those buildings in the background and a railroad track or two.

Heading back west to Willis Ave. The rear parking lot was just constructed outside the Parkway, rather than on top of it like the front parking lot. I think that was a much better way to go.

Walking north from Dow Ave., an intact stretch of Parkway hidden from view by trees but very easily accessed.

Heading back south to Dow Ave. again. Ahead is Westbury Ave.
