Long Island Motor Parkway
Suffolk County

Most of the Parkway in Suffolk County is now part of CR 67 and driveable, which is the easiest way for the casual enthusiast to see the Parkway but also the least interesting. Still, there is one important piece of the Parkway accessible between the Suffolk/Nassau line and the beginning of CR 67. It starts just east of NY 110 but is not accessible from that angle. It then crosses Maxess Rd. and peters out at Duryea Rd. Park in the lot at the northeast corner of Maxess and Duryea; turn right and head to the eastern corner of the lot along Duryea. Walk across Duryea and past a gate until you come to a clearing to the right...

To the left (east), the clearing looks just like a utility pole right of way. There's nothing to follow there.

To the right (west), a path leads through the trees. And it's paved. This is the eastern end of the Maxess Rd. section of the Parkway.

Two views back east as I continue walking west. The path from Duryea came in to the rear of the first photo.

Looking east and west from a clearing. The westward view appears to look promising...

On the west side of the clearing near Maxess Rd. is this 1910 railroad overpass, or to be precise, the abutments of the former overpass. The second and third photos are the left (southern) abutment and the last three photos are the right (northern) abutment.

The SB face of the Maxess Rd. historical sign and looking east at the location of the overpass.

Looking across Maxess Rd. at the right of way that continues west. Although I did not continue tracing the path, there are a few hundred more good feet of trail to explore before having to turn back.
