New York Roads - Long Island Motor Pkwy. - Queens - EB

Long Island Motor Parkway
Queens, eastbound up to Springfield Blvd.

Starting at the beginning of the bike path along 199th St. and heading south inside Cunningham Park. Original concrete guiderail posts straddle the old Parkway and clearly have not been maintained as part of the path.

Still heading along 199th St., crossing 73rd Ave. in the first photo. Follow the link at bottom to see more photos of that overpass. In the middle of this photo run, the path ducks to the right and comes back to the left, whereas the original Parkway of course went straight through. I am most curious as to why this diversion was necessary.

Across Francis Lewis Blvd. and ending up at the I-295 underpass. The old overpass at Francis Lewis Blvd. has been completely transmogrified by the dualization of the road below. The I-295 underpass, despite obviously dating to when the Clearview Expwy. was constructed, is not near the path of the Motor Parkway. It veered off in the vicinity of the third photo (probably a little before, because the path has gotten narrow) and is cut off by the Expressway. Why? Because the Parkway was above grade at the point it would have crossed I-295, requiring additional construction to elevate the freeway over what was just a bike path by then.

Rejoining the path of the Parkway in a very obvious way and continuing over the Hollis Hills Terrace overpass, another one that hasn't been altered in over 80 years (except for rehabbing).

This part of the trail captures very well the essence of the Parkway, even if it does include a more modern overpass at Bell Blvd. at the end. The first photo, coming off the Hollis Hills Terr. overpass, is rife with guiderail posts on either side.

Up to and across the Springfield Blvd. overpass, ending this photo run.
