New York Roads - Long Island Motor Pkwy. - Queens - Bridges

Long Island Motor Parkway
Queens Bridges

73rd Ave. Bridge

The 73rd Ave. bridge is very easily accessed by pedestrians off of quiet 199th St. I'm walking north on 199th and turning right (east) on 73rd here.

The south side of the bridge, looking to the right while crossing underneath the bike path. This 1926 bridge was obviously built as the last part of the Parkway when it was extended west into Queens. The original construction style is simple but sturdy, and it was refurbished recently so that it will continue to stand for many more years.

Now looking left at the north side.
Union Tpk. Path Bridge

While eastbound on the bike path/former Parkway, looking left and right at the brick fasciae. There is no direct connection between the bike path and the path below, implying that this was only an underpass and not ever an interchange. However, trails have been blazed down the embankments to allow pedestrians (walk your bike) to travel between the two.

Walking north from Union Tpk. between 234th and 235th Streets to the Alley Pond Park tennis courts. The curved girders of the bridge's underside are also unique to this structure. The path may have been added after 1938 when the Parkway was sold to the Parks Department, especially considering that brickface structures are also found around New York City on parkways and expressways of the 1940's and early 1950's.

Walking back south from the tennis courts.
The old Parkway EB up to Springfield Blvd.
The old Parkway WB from Springfield Blvd.
