Long Island Motor Parkway
Nassau County - Garden City

The Parkway may be more traceable than I give it credit for. South of Westbury Ave., it heads around the backs of some industrial buildings and follows the fence line to the railroad tracks. I went to the end of E. 2nd St. and didn't see anything worth photographing, but you may have better results by heading south from Westbury Ave. (east of Bruce Terrace). South of the railroad, the Parkway right of way is now apartment buildings conveniently located on Vanderbilt Drive. The right of way runs through more backyards and heads south until Clinton Rd., where it crosses just north of Vanderbilt Ct. You can't park on Vanderbilt Ct., and even if you could, you may not be able to get to the Parkway alignment. Head down to Stewart Ave., turn onto Raymond Ct., and park by the dead end. The Parkway continues left and right from the end, but most of the interesting stuff is to the left.

Heading westward from Raymond Ct. on the old Parkway.

As I approach Clinton Rd., there are a couple of guiderail posts and then a stone wall crossing the Parkway. Because stone walls generally don't cross freeways, I presume it was added later. Through pure fortuity, the wall has been worn down over the years along the path to be followed - and yet it's less than 70 years old? Perhaps this is a case of shoddy craftsmanship.

From the stone wall to Clinton Rd. is a short section but has something unique from all other sections of the Parkway - the wooden fencing is still intact between guiderail posts! All of the Parkway pages where I refer to guiderail posts should actually resemble something in these photos. Because wood is very limited in effectiveness at redirecting crashes (as in, possessing no capability whatever), the only part of the posts "guiding" anyone is that it's tough to fit a car between two of them at a shallow angle. Really, this is more of a decorative fence along the edge of habitation.

Heading back east, across the stone wall, up to Raymond Ct., which has more stone guiderail posts along the north (Parkway westbound), and a look east at the short right of way there. I did not walk east, but I do not see how it could be more interesting than what I found by walking all the way west.
