Long Island Motor Parkway
Nassau County - Bethpage

Under the power lines and Bethpage State Park
From the banked curve to Central Ave.

Somewhere east of Wantagh Ave. (where my photos start) and somewhere west of Albergo Ct. and aptly named Motor Lane, the old Parkway alignment merges into the old Long Island Railroad alignment that is now used as power line right of way. You can park on Universe Drive, cross Wantagh Ave., and start following the power lines from there. You will need to head north to Arthur Ave. to bypass one curious section where the right of way has been dug into a giant pit, then come back south on Broadway and head east to the best part - the only banked curve still around with its banking intact. It is on the far left inside the trees, and may be best reached from the end of Herman Ave. (park and walk - you'll see it easily). The right of way continues up to Central Ave., reappears briefly on the north side of the eastern end of Revere Ave. underneath the power lines, then starts up again along the Bethpage State Park entrance. Bring your bike, park on Manchester Dr. off of Plainview Rd., cross north and head up until the road curves to the right. Go ahead and follow the bike path, but keep your eye on the entrance road that's following the Parkway. After the entrance tolls (which I don't think bicyclists have to pay), ditch the bike path before it curves left and head back to the entrance road. The Parkway continues straight back from there for quite a distance - I did not have the time to bike the route myself - and peters out in the trees north of the power line clearing. If you can trace it to Barry Lane/Schoolhouse Rd., you have done very well. There's not anything traceable from there until Suffolk County that I can see.

Chunks of Parkway concrete left lying in the right of way or piled up on the side next to NY 135 north of Sophia St.
