New York Roads - Belt Pkwy. WB

Belt Parkway westbound

Notice the separate exit tabs with four rounded corners, instead of being integral with the signs like the ones to follow. After Exit 24A, the upcoming railroad overpass was originally built for two directions of two-lane traffic on Laurelton Parkway. Belt Parkway demands are heavier now, but the cost of replacing railroad infrastructure is so high that this traffic split remains. The last photo is courtesy Doug Kerr.

The first, third, and sixth (Exit 18B 1½ miles) photos are courtesy Mike Byrnes, and the last two are courtesy Doug Kerr and since replaced. Actually, Michael's last photo and Doug's first one are both at Exit 19, so that's how you know Doug's is gone.

The combined ramp from NY 878 (Nassau Expwy.), NY 27 (Conduit Ave.), and Belt Pkwy.

Last photo courtesy Doug Kerr, so either those signs have been replaced or my camera just misfired. Notice that Exit 7N is now Exit 7B - also notice that "NORTH" has been removed from the middle of the sign, since Exit 7A is also accessed from the right lane, soon after. This is not the same Ocean Parkway that I have a page on; this one isn't really a Parkway in the New York State system, but dates to Frederick Law Olmstead and the 19th Century.

Off the Exit 6N ramp, so I ended up missing the Exit 6S signage.

So thanks to Mike Byrnes for this photo.

Button copy (the Exit 4 tab in the fourth photo counts), birds, and bridges come together. Click on the last photo for a button copy closeup, courtesy Mike Byrnes.

The way the signs in the last two photos looked in their previous generation, courtesy Doug Kerr.

Here's one from a previous generation that's still sticking around, posted high above the exit ramp and dating to the opening of the Verrazano Bridge in the mid-'60s. The arrow makes it a legitimate guide sign, so it should stay up. Forever.

After Exit 3 takes traffic to I-278 WB and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Belt Parkway traffic continuing north onto I-278 EB (say, going to Manhattan or the Bronx) continues under 278, around the shore, and back to I-278 a few miles later. In the last photo, I-278 WB flies overhead in tubular green style.
