Michigan Roads - US 31 - S. of Ludington

US 31 south of Ludington

The US 31 NB freeway ends temporarily at Exit 24, but picks up again a couple of miles later along the soon-to-begin I-196. I-196 just has a regular trumpet at I-94, so there is some work to do to extend the freeway from this stub into 196 unless the revised plans take root to connect it into 94 to the south. I finally visited this famous freeway stub. These photos look south from Napier Ave., which is the overpass at Exit 24, to the ramps that all traffic must use.

Napier Ave. EB at the closed NB onramp. US 31 is signed west on Napier Ave. to I-94.

Northward along the freeway stub. The 35 looks like a contractor-only speed limit, but who would enforce it? What else could it be?

Various views of the planned SB offramp.

Taking the open ramp to US 31 SB, I look back north at the freeway that's supposed to lead into it.

I am the only mainline traffic at this merge.

In the meantime, US 31 SB shares space with I-94 WB outside Benton Harbor. The third overpass, Empire Ave., has since been replaced.

Original neon in Grand Haven.

NB on the freeway out of Grand Haven toward Muskegon. The consistently styled overpasses, built low to much earlier than Interstate standards, are at Van Wagoner St., Taft St., and Pontaluna Rd. The BGS should have just a teensy bit smaller "BUSINESS" on it.

SB at the beginning of I-96 to those Goshdarn Rapids. The overpass is Hettler Rd. and the emergency I-96 goes... well, nowhere, because I-96 ends here. It just rejoins Airline Hwy. as I-96 transitions to old US 16. Notice how flat the Clearview numerals look compared to the other white elements on the sign - obviously print on a sign blank. Also notice that Clearview is not allowed for numerals.

There are only 66 alphanumeric county routes in Michigan, so it's rare to find two at once. I took this SB photo because the shields use different fonts thanks to the digit "1", and for the yellow square backgrounds.

I love me my wind farms. These photos head south to Business US 31 Hart, which runs through Mears. I see no other way to interpret this sign.

Certain things are not to be abbreviated, "Marquette" being one. NB.
