Maryland Roads - Old MD 442

Former MD 442

Royal Swan Road EB from MD 292 to Rosendale Cannery Rd., where the concrete (and presumably the onetime state highway) ends. It was one of the first highways paved anywhere, let alone in Maryland, so it was originally just given a single 12' strip, the idea being that in the rare case of two cars (or one and a carriage) having to pass each other, they would dip onto the graded but unpaved shoulder ever so briefly. In the modern age, asphalt has replaced dirt or gravel, but the original concrete amazingly remains.

A look back west from the east end. I'm not the only one.
