Louisiana Roads - US 90 - New Orleans

US 90 in and around New Orleans

This 1940 bridge crosses some railroad tracks in Westwego. But in this case, eastwego.

And eastwecontinue as two of the railroad tracks start to rise next to the highway. And rise, and rise, toward that distant bridge. LA 18 can play innocent, because it's just along for the ride until the next intersection. It could use regular-width digits, say a D font instead of a B.

Well, that bridge is the Huey Long Bridge, and it has rail in the center with US 90 on either side. Therefore, the highway needs to get up to that level at some point. To do so, in the future there will be elevated approaches that will fly over LA 18 instead of passing through a traffic circle at the base of the bridge. These photos are the WB side under construction, which will stay on the other side of the railroad trestle for a few thousand feet.

Since the construction here is on the same side as I am, it's the future EB lanes taking shape as the railroad trestle continues to climb ever higher. Finally, US 90 bids farewell to LA 18 (with a more normal number) and is able to mount its own assault on the bridge. Those photos are on another page via the big link at bottom.

Done with the Huey Long Bridge, US 90 makes its way toward New Orleans. Here are more shields using a blank sign with the numbers taped on.

1931 waterworks along the EB side of the road.

EB onto the Causeway Blvd. NB ramp; Causeway Blvd. is LA 3046 up to US 61. The last sign is very outdated and I therefore love it, while the first couple of signs are lazily done with a lazy 6 and heavy 90. The half-assed hyphen doesn't even bother me, because I'm not a fan of the hyphenated routes.

Tulane Ave. EB where it picks up US 90 under I-10. The green sign is proper, but the blue sign is intriguing.

US 90 WB in the same spot. Parts of US 90 in New Orleans travel the opposite direction they're signed, but if you pretend the river is east-west, then the problem segments are just north-south jogs in the road.

WB at the I-10/Business US 90 interchange where the latter route begins. Business 90 WB heads almost due east until it gets across the Mississippi, again just a symptom of the river's curvature rather than a disease to be cured.
