Kentucky Roads - US 60 E. of Versailles/KY 1

US 60 east of Versailles and US 60/KY 1

EB at the beginning of the Blue Grass Pkwy., west of Lexington. It would make a lot of sense to extend it to either I-64 or KY 4, and then connect 4 to 64/75, especially because of the airport between the end of the Parkway and Lexington. What's the point of having a limited access road that ends short of the city with only one halfway decent connection via a surface arterial?

US 60 WB joins US 27 SB and US 68 WB in downtown Lexington, even though they're all signed around KY 4 instead, and then breaks away at the One Way sign to continue west past the state-named shields.

See what I mean? This WB sign, just past the KY 4 ring road, has the US 60 shield ripped off even though it's still technically on the route. It's no accident.

More WB signs, starting in Winchester.

Ever seen a historic sign quite like this? There are apparently several of them across the state with different obverses related to the Civil War. This one is across from Prichard Elementary School in Grayson. Click for a closeup, since you can't possibly see it at this resolution.

US 60 EB/KY 1 SB across Little Sandy River.

A pair of junctions with KY 3297 sandwiches WB photos of the Upper Stinson Creek bridge (first bridge photo) and the same Little Sandy River crossing. It may not surprise you that KY 3297 is an old alignment of US 60, even called Midland Trail east of town.

How did I end up on 09 S∩?

The former driveway to Hanson Brick outside Ashland has a former warning sign.

WB out of Ashland to another crossing of the Little Sandy River.

Ashland likes its tiny overhead signs. The first one is WB at the end of the 12th St./13th St. one-way couplet, a strange way to sign a U-turn instead of just "East US 60." The second is at Business US 23, Winchester Ave. Technically, US 60 EB turns left here, not right, but I'll get to that in a moment.

First, here's a dirty old sign on 12th St. (US 60 WB) at Carter Ave., and a newer sign on US 60 EB.

Now, courtesy Lou Corsaro, US 60 EB meets US 23 in Ashland at the Simeon Willis Bridge (the green one is the Ben Williamson), but not really as shown. If you want to go north on 23, sure, make a left. But why not make a right on Winchester Avenue to follow 23 South and 60 East, which is what the newer overhead signs show? The answer is that these routes were pulled from Winchester onto Greenup Ave., which is a block closer to the Ohio River. Winchester is still Business US 23, but apparently has enough traffic (not when I went on Saturday, though) to warrant being bypassed. So, okay, I'm fine with that. I can't believe, though, that the fastest way to head east on US 60 is to make a left (west), then the next possible right on 11th St., then right again, instead of making a right on Winchester and then jogging left at the first opportunity (15th St.). Either way, the state has to still maintain a small part of Winchester Ave. and a one-way side street pair to bring US 60 up from Greenup Ave. to the 12th/13th St. pair, so why not pick a street pair that doesn't go backwards? On the Spur US 23 page (link below), you'll see that the sign in the opposite direction, coming off the bridge from Ohio, points US 23 south down Winchester, which makes so much more sense. Thanks to Richard Brown for completing my knowledge gap in this city.

Okay, now that you've got that down, here is the current (2013) signage on US 60 EB at Business US 23. It's a far sight better than a pair of misaligned shields, though the shapes of the US 52 and 60 shields have me reconsidering that assessment. The only shield that shouldn't have a "TO" banner is US 60, and the previous overhead LGS established that even though US 60 goes left, the best route "to" East 60 goes right, and the same for South 23.

Skipping the US 23 concurrency, not much has changed with shield quality. Not only are all of the US highways misshapen, I-64 has joined in with an off-center print.

US 60 WB from the Big Sandy River, a.k.a. the WV state line, into Catlettsburg. How about those ugly shields? Still ugly.
