Hawai`i Roads - HI 360 bridges

HI 360 bridge photos

The first seven (unless I missed one) of the 50 or so one-lane bridges on the way to Hana. The exact number is somehow disputed, even though there are clearly a finite and unchanging number of bridges out there. In the background of the last photo is either a stone waterworks or the last hideout of the menehune (Hawaiian leprechauns, basically).

The next four bridges, mixed between some of the greenery on the scenery page (photos 5-7) and the HI 360 road photos page (the last bridge would be photo 3).

Only two bridges here - the last three photos are views of the same concrete arch. The water thievery is being carried out by the East Maui Irrigation Company, sending creek water to farmers on the slopes to promote agriculture and the state's economy. Of course, the other, non-farming locals hate the move and want the natural beauty of all the tumbling streams restored. Luckily I only care about the bridges and don't have to take sides.

Underneath the second bridge is former infrastructure related to domestic water supply. There's something about the rusted gears that tells me the water supply has improved since this was built.

Rain is common on the Hana Highway. It generally sits on the slopes of Haleakala, leaving the ocean sunny, but since the Hana Highway winds in and out, sometimes it dips into a cloud. Doesn't matter, the camera got wet but the photos kept coming out.

Not all of the one-lane stretches of the road are over bridges, but the first bridge here is at the end of one that heads around a curve - a curve that also has a vertical crest, meaning you can't see possible opposing traffic either as you come around the bend or even after you've come around.

The third photo gives you a chance to be the bridge from the second photo. The last bridge opens into the outskirts of Hana - there's no formal beginning or end of settlement; the houses just start appearing and suddenly there's a town, and then the houses stop appearing again.

Final count: 34 bridges photographed, just about (hopefully just over) 2/3 of the total one-lane bridges out there. A few of them have been replaced, so overall I think I did a pretty good job.
