Georgia Roads - US 17 - N. of S. Newport

US 17 north of South Newport

An old alignment diverges leaving South Newport, I cross the eponymous (yes, this page too) South Newport River NB, and then it comes back in as I look back south.

Jumping across I-95 (state-name shield on the main US 17 page), an old alignment appears on the left and disappears after a long straightaway, heading north toward Riceboro. Obviously some locals don't see a need to wait for a crossover.

Get your fill of historical signs here in Midway. Button Gwinnett should have been the most famous Declaration of Independence signer, but he didn't get the quill first. The rusty sign in the bushes may be the original style of Georgia historical sign, something I haven't seen elsewhere.

SB ugliness in Fleming, courtesy Shawn Latta and submitted by Adam Prince. I do not like the shield style that fills the entire background of the shield, nor the Series B font for a 2-digit route in a 2-digit shield when Series D would easily fit, if not even E.

US 17 crosses I-95 a lot, but only in this state.

Remember GA 25? GDOT won't let you forget! There are plenty of old signs here, however misshapen and bloated. I lose some love for the cellulite-ridden US 17 in the last photo.

More history, looking east on GA 144. The arrows are pointing US 17 NB traffic to GA 144 EB, but the signs are off to the right and facing EB traffic, as if signaling a right turn onto US 17 SB.

NB, just completely the wrong shape.

US 17 NB prepares to join I-516 WB (which is heading north-by-northeast) to get to I-16 EB. US 80 WB is left and EB is straight ahead, and, oh, GA 25 follows US 17 onto the ramp, which was kinda a given.

I-16 ends by running down to Montgomery St., while US 17 NB continues the freeway with the dropped "i" dots and confusingly signed exits. There is only one Exit 166, and there is only one exit at a time after that. Of note is that GA 25 has finally left US 17, staying on I-516 when US 17 left. I-16 is secret GA 404, which makes US 17 not-so-secret GA Spur 404 once I-16 leaves.

This is the first sign in Georgia, and the switch to Clearview apparently switched that left BGS to a huge and ugly (but state-name) I-16 shield. It also has a decidedly non-Clearview and non-shield I-95, and one of those conditions should be remedied. Notice that this time, we have a 25 CONN(ector) instead of a SPUR, keeping GA 25 in the spotlight even when it's not following US 17. This view is southbound on the bridge over the Savannah River, courtesy Lou Corsaro, into the eponymous city. Ha! You can't escape eponymy!

US 17 winds north onto the new Savannah River bridge, with a view of the demolished piers of the old bridge just to the west, then touches down on Hutchinson Island to meet the second, still-intact old bridge into South Carolina.
