Florida Roads - I-95 S. of Pompano Beach

I-95 south of Pompano Beach

Starting at the end, the southernmost point on the continental Interstate Highway System.

I-95 SB at what I believe is Exit 3 (now 2A), and then on that ramp eastbound (between SW 2nd and 3rd Sts.), courtesy Averill Hecht and taken in June 1979.

Southbound at the massive I-95/FL 836/I-395 interchange, which is now Exit 3, again taken in June 1979 by Averill Hecht. There are more views on the I-395 and FL 836 pages, linked below.

Nowadays, the LEFT LANE ENDS sign would be black on yellow. And, apparently, the shields would look a whole lot worse. Second photo taken in June 1979 by Averill Hecht.

The 79th St. Causeway heading from Miami Beach to Miami, FL 934 WB. I guess FDOT didn't want to call 79th St. an EXIT from 79th St.

A selection of older NB signage in Miami, including my best attempt at a Frankenphoto of night and day. The Ft. Lauderdale sign is typical of old FDOT freeway destination signage. The Exit 11 and 10B nighttime photos are next to each other on the same gantry.

Now SB in the same area, where even on the old sign, US 441 goes Jersey-style with a black background. If Ives Dairy Rd. looks suspiciously altered, that's because it used to be FL 854 with the appropriate attendant shields (the remnant of one of which is on the Exit 16 sign). When I'm high up on a single-lane roadway looking at the Miami skyline, that's the express (HOV) lane flying over the Golden Glades interchange, where I-95 meets the four highways indicated by the 1¾ mile distance in the third photo. And finally, I end the run with a similar distance sign to what you saw NB in the previous photo run.

A narrow shield and sunshiny VMS to start us off NB again, and a pair of Turnpike trailblazers for Exit 20. Maybe it would be more helpful to say "EXIT 20" instead of "NEXT EXIT," like the signs further down this page.

FL 817 NB and SB at FL 848, which also goes west to FL 823, but who really cares about that road? There appears to have at one point been another sign on each assembly, so that could have been a WEST 848. These are courtesy Costa Ioannidis.

Continuing NB past a couple more old signs and a beautiful four-level stack interchange. Top level red, middle level yellow, bottom level green, and I-95 passes under it all. In the first photo, the Exit Only tab does not need to have a black line on top - it's not something you'd notice until you've edited several hundred photos of Exit Only tabs. Mixed into the I-595 interchange photos are some bubble shields, stretched two-digit shields with three-digit numbers.

Yet more styles of Turnpike trailblazer old and new (compared to the Exit 20 signs above), and look, this time the exit number is mentioned! I'm foreshadowing greater things, but you'll have to continue north via the big link below.
