California Roads - US 101 - N of Rio Dell

US 101 north of Rio Dell

A railroad bridge conveniently crosses the Van Duzen River next to me as I head north to Fortuna and down the Exit 687 ramp.

The most interesting sign in Eureka is R St. NB at the beginning of CA 255. The shield should have "US" inside and is much wider than normal, the type you would see on non-reflective guide signs of the 1980s-early 1990s.

The most interesting signs on this page are at the other end of CA 255 on Samoa Blvd. WB.

Most of these signs relate to Exit 728, including the last one on Main St. EB in Trinidad. See how the wide shield looks better in button copy?

SB signs from the same area, again with the oldest at CA 255.

NB again, the first sign has its distances patched because the sign predates the 1993 bypass of the Redwood Scenic Parkway north of Orick. That actually lengthened US 101 but also shortened its travel time by avoiding a scenic, tourist-laden 2-lane.

Two photos from the north end of the Redwood Scenic Parkway and the first one heading south.

These SB photos show that Redwood has been renamed after some guy who directed the National Park Service or something, maybe directed the Save the Redwoods League, I dunno. Head of the CA Division of Beaches and Parks. Possibly relevant.

North again to the Klamath River bridge, mainly notable for having bear bottoms. The last photo looks south.

2 miles to the south, the road briefly widens to 4 lanes with a striped median about 6 feet wide. I don't think this sign is needed.

A couple more SB signs. I'm north of the Redwood Scenic Parkway now, so it makes sense that the distances are patched over again. But wait, Klamath is north of the parkway's end! In fact, there's been essentially no realignment of US 101 in the intervening 19 miles. What changed?

Past Crescent City's business district and north to the beginning of US 199. Sadly, that sign has been replaced, leaving just the one in the last photo.

Similarly, the left sign on US 199 SB remains, but the one on the right for US 101 NB was replaced.

CA 197 WB at its end, then looking south across the Smith River. Gotta admit, the blank diamond is attention-getting.
