Exits 44-23

Scenes of Oakland include downtown and the new Oakland Airport Connector rail link, opening just after my visit in November 2014. It should have inherited the name of the shuttle it replaced: AirBART.

The last two photos are the left and right sides of the same gantry, as different as they look. Before that, Marina Blvd. (Exit 33) is patched due to mainline construction shifting lanes.

Washington Ave. splits from the ramp to I-238, which was once just plain CA 238 until someone decided it needed to be an Interstate and not to disturb CA 180 or 480 (then assigned to the Embarcadero) despite AASHTO begging and pleading.

Continuing down to a sign on the Winton Ave. (Exit 28) C-D road that is part of its cloverleaf interchange, the two signs before that are left and right on the same bridge. Why do you need a 3/4 mile advance sign on the same structure as a distance sign that tells you it's 3/4 miles ahead? The advance sign is missing most of its graffiti protection, maybe a subtle way to justify eliminating it in the future.

The first photo is on the left side of the new and boring Exit 27 sign, and is here for the narrow shield (and maybe the poor use of space overall). The second photo is on the ramp and fortunately not replaced.

Thanks to a patch job, the last two signs have the same distances on them despite being decently separated from each other. I'm sure the first sign once said 1 mile, but Caltrans should have finished the job and patched the next distance to 1/2 mile.

Finishing the page with a glimpse of Mission Peak to the southeast.
