California Roads - I-580 WB (Exits 21A-1)/I-80 EB

(Exits 21A-1) and I-80 EB/I-580 WB

The first photo was taken in the background of my Exit 21B photo, showing a rare all-caps guide sign. The last two photos are on the left and right of the same gantry.

Again, left and right of the same gantry. I explained my rationale on the corresponding EB page, but I believe the right sign was once SOUTH CA 17, the former designation for I-880, since both CA 24 and I-980 are east-west.

Boy, there sure are a lot of patches on those last two signs. I'm not a betting man, but I'd still bet that the left sign (3rd photo) involved I-80 and US 50, which was following I-580 to this point historically, while the right sign (last photo) involved NORTH CA 17, and both signs had US 40 next to the I-80 shield. I would not bet on what's beneath Berkeley, but logical choices are Richmond and San Rafael, the next two cities along I-580 and historically 17.

With one last gasp of departed US highways, I-580 WB joins I-80 EB and I get a view west across the bay of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge that leads to it. Through the sunny haze, the truss at left is the former eastern span and the cable-stay to the right is the new one.

The last two photos are left and right on the same gantry, and there are Richmond and San Rafael as I expected.

Say goodbye to the multiplex, and click on the third photo for a closeup of six lanes' worth of button copy.

This is everything left worth photographing on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The first photo looks west at the south end of Marin Peninsula.

Since I crossed the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge eastward, I have no WB photos for you, so I start looking north at Big Rock Ridge and end just before I-580 merges into US 101 NB.

Bellam Blvd. EB under I-580 Exit 1. No need for an I-580 shield as US 101 is the only place it goes.
