California Roads - I-580 EB - Exits 1-9

Exits 1-9

The first EB exit meets the NB ramp from US 101's Exit 451 and comes to button copy.

It doesn't take long for I-580 to run out of exits before ascending the 1956 Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

I'm not convinced the diagonal members are seismically stable, since similar were replaced on the I-80 Bay Bridge to the south, but there are enough other members that I'm sure CA has prevented the upper deck from collapsing onto the lower. I hope.

Halfway along the bridge, I look north toward the tiny "The Brothers" islands in San Pablo Strait and the San Pablo Peninsula defining its right shore.

The rest of the journey on the boring lower level (sorry!), then looking south at the more interesting Bay Bridge spans. The western span is four suspension towers, the eastern span is cable stayed, and you can see the old truss being dismantled behind it. No one's flying into the water, don't worry.

I'm not sure Richmond Pkwy. is really the best way to I-80 EB unless I-580 is backed up. It takes the long way around the northwest side of Richmond and isn't a freeway. Other upcoming exits connect more easily to I-80.

The last photo is on the Harbour Way (Exit 9) ramp. How pretentious is that spelling? Maximum Speed is an outdated legend on CA signs, but the patch over the former 55 mandate tells you that it predates the repeal of the law in 1995. Signs aren't supposed to live longer than 20 years.
