California Roads - CA 99/I-5/old US 99 - SB N. of Atwater

CA 99 (former US 99) SB north of Atwater
and I-5/CA 99 SB

Starting in Chico, through the beginning of the divided highway north of Yuba City, down to the I-5 junction north of Sacramento. There's nearly a mile of clearing from the railroad overcrossing by Lomo until the freeway begins on a road that hasn't been divided since leaving CA 149, but there's no point in adding that mile without going farther north.

Sacramento, running right next to old CA 99 on the Jibboom Street Bridge across the American River, which you may have seen on the main page.

I-5 drops off CA 99 onto Business I-80/US 50, the original I-80 freeway through Sacramento. The first two photos are left and right on the same gantry, the third photo has the signs on either side squeezed together, and the last two photos are again left and right on the same gantry on the Exit 519A ramp that carries CA 99 SB. Notice how these signs ignore Business I-80. This was actually junctioning I-80 until 1983 (hence the patched "TO"), when it was shifted north to what had been I-880 once it became clear the east freeway leg through Sacramento would never be brought up to Interstate standard. (Actually, I think the US 50 shield is a patch job as well. "Fresno" was probably "Reno." For all I know, CA 99 was patched over a US 99 shield.)

The last two photos are left and right on the same overpass. Farmington Rd. is only CA 4 to the east now, as a new freeway was built on the south side of Stockton.
