California Roads - CA 118 WB

CA 118 westbound

All photos were taken while traveling eastbound.

The last photo is on the Exit 44A ramp. The practice of labeling every freeway as such on advance exit signs, even for Interstates, probably stems from back in the 1950s and 1960s when many, if not most, of the freeways in California's cities (especially L.A.) were not Interstates, and the Interstate system was a new concept anyway. It can still be a good idea to let people know that the next exit will keep them on the freeway system for awhile longer, if they need to stop somewhere.

Why bother greening out the word "EXIT" on these advance signs? If it's for MUTCD compliance, Caltrans has never really done anything based on the rest of the nation regarding signing practices, so why this one thing? For example, look at the next to last photos for DeSoto Ave. Notice that the white border is inset, and not just that, but it's not even present on the bottom of the sign. That's decidedly un-MUTCD-like.

Clearly, Rocky Peak Rd. is aptly named.

Usually, a sign like the one for Madera Rd. NORTH would be found on an exit ramp or C-D road, but here it's right on the freeway.

It seems like there should be something else under Collins Dr. at Exit 19B, or perhaps there once was. My guess is Campus Rd.

CA 118 leaves the freeway where CA 23 gets on, and for the briefest of moments there's no route on the WB-SB mainline. CA 118 wasn't supposed to exit at Los Angeles Ave. (which follows the route of old CA 118 to the east for several miles), but instead was to have continued on as a freeway.

To the end of the non-freeway section.
