California Roads - CA 1 - Bixby Creek-Santa Cruz

CA 1, Bixby Creek to Santa Cruz

Photos are northbound unless otherwise stated.

As noted, the page starts at Bixby Creek. The bridge dates to 1932.

2 photos each of the Rocky Creek and Garrapata Creek Bridges, opened in 1932 and 1931 respectively.

3 photos of the 1931 Granite Canyon Bridge and 1 of the 1935 Malpaso Creek Bridge, entering the Carmel Highlands.

The 1933 Wildcat Creek Bridge and then just a wall. Nothing else to see here, just focus on the wall. Cool wall, huh.

CA 68 joins CA 1 at Exit 399A and they become a freeway together in Monterey as the wide shields return.

The last three photos are, respectively, left and right on the same gantry and then on the corresponding ramp.

There is also SB button copy. The last three photos here are, respectively, left and right on the same gantry and then above the corresponding exit.

From Exit 412 to the Exit 433 ramp, featuring the 1903 Salinas River railroad truss to the east.

A few SB button copy exit distance signs.

The corresponding NB ones are rather crowded, but I don't mind larger button copy letters. More to ogle.

The last photo isn't button copy, but I took it for the tiny "st" squeezed in. Caltrans argues that in order to not replace tens of thousands of sign structures in the state, they need new signs to fit the same dimensions as the old, so exit numbers just get added in whatever shape box fits.

Last and clearest set of SB signs.

Don't think too hard, as Exit 439 leads to both Soquel Dr. and Soquel Ave.
