Alabama Roads - Old US 31 Garden City

Old US 31, Garden City

It's a short drive on US 31 out of Garden City before you cross the Warrior River Mulberry Fork, and if you happen to look left, you'll see something that looks like a railroad bridge, but less sturdy. Make the next left, and when you hit the dirt pile on Old US 31 NB you'll see this.

Go ahead, it's safe to cross.

Wait, just how safe is this? I'm liking the straight truss members of the railroad bridge (in the background) a lot better.

To the east, an interesting railroad bridge that deserves a closeup. To the west, just the modern US 31 bridge, nothing special.

Details on the north side of the bridge, all to the east of the old road: cable guiderail, an old guiderail post, the bridge abutment wingwall.

Since my car's on the other side, I cross back, confident that I'll survive. It worked. Notice that you can see remnants of the old pavement striping, not so much the paint as the mark it left down the middle of the road.
