AB 2, Grande Prairie to Peace River



Old style sign, new style sign, same interchange. In 2013, AB 43 headed east from here as a divided highway, but AB 43X headed west for a short distance before petering out into the brush. By the time you read this, both directions at this interchange will be signed for AB 43, thanks to the completion of the northwestern Grande Prairie bypass, but AB 2 still ends here.
Heading south, AB 2 swerves around the established town of Clairmont. The reality is more gradual, but the zoom lens shows which road is old AB 2.


The Dunvegan Bridge is scenic in its own right. Photos head south across the Peace River in, of course, Dunvegan.


This is the last WB intersection on AB 2. As it continues to head north and east toward Peace River, it keeps alternating NB/SB and EB/WB directional signage as it feels convenient.


Congratulations, Duncan! You did it all by yourself. You're a big boy now!


I believe this is the last SB intersection on AB 2, 75 km east of the last WB intersection. AB 2 should really be east-west the whole time for clarity, especially since this direction of AB 2 was "north" not too long ago. Check out the unique Mackenzie Highway shield while you're here.


EB from there through reconstruction of the Roma Junction railway bridge. This nice railing is now history.


I will never understand why Alberta combines "next exit" with an arrow that implies the exit is right here. The BGSs are EB and WB, and then the older ramp shield is on the WB exit.


Eastbound across the 1968 Peace River Bridge in Peace River. Yes, we already crossed it before. But now we're heading east/west instead of north/south. The parallel CN railway bridge was built in 1918 by Central Canada Railway, ironically in competition for the northern Alberta market with CN at the time. They won the battle but lost the war. This highway bridge is a bottleneck to a pair of short but locally trafficked 4-lane divided approaches on each side of the river, so as of 2020 work is slated to finally twin the span. I really hope it replicates the existing bridge.


Back west across the bridge, railroad to the left now. I have no explanation for why the WB railing is a newer style than the EB railing.
