Québec Roads - A-50 - E. of Montebello

Autoroute 50 east of Montebello

All photos were taken westbound, or else from a crossroad, and thus progress from east to west. I'll point out whatever doesn't face west.

After several km, A-50 narrows down to a single carriageway, obviously to be dualized as the freeway is extended. The overpasses are all set, and as new as this part of the freeway is (it has been extended by degrees past Mirabel Airport), there's already graffiti on the unused westbound piers.

Well, maybe it's older than I thought. This type of exit gore sign was out of use by the 1980's, and almost all of them are gone. Modern gore signs just have a plain diagonal right arrow instead of the diagrammatic. This is Sortie 258 - apologies for the utility pole.

A-50 is dualized once more around the Lachute bypass (which began east of the Sortie 258 sign), obviously an older section of freeway than the connecting Super-2. All the fun ends at what will be, within one km, Sortie 255, at QC 148 on the west side of town. Obviously, pavement extends farther west, and there is work done at least as far west as Calumet. You'll have to switch to the QC 148 page (linked below) for a few far-away photos of that work. Sorry, but had I taken the time to visit each new overpass or future interchange, you wouldn't have the fun A-30 page I've made.

The future WB onramp from QC 148, a loop inside the offramp that's currently the WB end of this half of A-50.

After the next section of eastern A-50 opened, there is a whole new set of overpasses missing a carriageway, although which one's missing switches partway between. I had to include a closeup of the second overpass to prove to you that there is a Montée Hall - do you want the road under side #1 of the overpass, or will you trade it for side #2? The other ones are Montée Rochon (first) and Ch. Kilmar at Sortie 233.

In September 2011, A-50 made it all the way to Ch. Avoca. It looks ready to go farther, but not all of the road is in this state of dress. The last photo is the base of the EB offramp, with the onramp/beginning of A-50 to the right.

Looking east from Montée Boucher, the next overpass west of Ch. Avoca. At full zoom, 2 km looks like nothing.

Looking west from the same location. The tourist signs are fine on side roads, but who has the time to read all that and grab a phone number or website address at freeway speeds?

Montée Fassett NB at future Sortie 216 in September 2011. This is actually a brand-new street to give Autoroute access to the little town of Fassett along QC 148. I know Autoroute shields get wide on BGS, but this is taking that concept to an extreme.

Up the future WB onramp to the paved and signed but unmarked freeway. It looks ready to drive, but don't let that fool you - not all of the overpasses have been constructed yet, and there's not necessarily any warning before reaching a dropoff because only construction vehicles are supposed to be up here.

Due to the unbuilt WB carriageway, the shape of the ramps actually takes them into A-50 WB much closer to the overpass than A-50 EB, so that's why there's no EB offramp visible in this eastward-facing photo from the WB onramp gore.

Backed up a bit, I find the EB offramp and head back down to Montée Fassett.

Oddly, Fassett is the lower destination despite being closer. It's more odd because this road is named after, and specifically built to access, that town.

Côte Angèle NB approaching its overpass of A-50 and looking west along 50 from there.

The view to the east along A-50 from the Côte Angèle overpass. The signs in the distance are for Sortie 216 and Montée Fassett.

Now looking to the west, with a brief but surprising dualized section that begins at km 206 (east of QC 321) and makes it here to km 211 (east of QC 323). You can see photos from those two highways and between (Ch. Ste-Hyacinthe) via the big links below.
