Pennsylvania Roads - I-81 NB

Courtesy Lou Corsaro. The shield at the top of this page is courtesy Averill Hecht.

Courtesy Michael Summa, taken in 1978. There are still signs this old around PA, but they're disappearing rapidly. The TURNPIKE shield was either white with black letters or (more likely?) green with white letters. Also, now this is Exit 52 instead of 17 thanks to mile-based numbering, and the E/W have become A/B. That's a good thing, because US 11 clearly doesn't go E-W.

The next set of signs date from the construction of the highway through Harrisburg. Note the centered exit tabs and nonreflective signs. Also note the shiny new exit numbers patched on and the OLD EXIT signs - follow the I-78 link at the bottom of the page and scroll down for an explanation. Also, the orange panels on the next-to-last picture are because of ongoing construction; it's probable the signs will be replaced afterward.

No, not THAT capital beltway. Just around Harrisburg, courtesy Lou Corsaro.

The amazing peeling sign. All around I-81, I-84, and I-380, PennDOT ordered signs with a new type of reflective background, or else ordered them from a new contractor, and hopefully they've learned from their mistake. In the meantime, I hope all of these signs are on the short list to be replaced.

Misty morning on the freeway.

All courtesy Doug Kerr, except for the first one from Lou Corsaro. The Exit 100 and 112 BGS's seem to be as old as the ones above.

Not button copy, but older bits of signage (with state name shields). Notice that the two 309 shields were definitely not made at the same time.
