Ontario Roads - Niagara RR 3A

The shield atop the page looks north from the end of RR 5 (Killaly St.) on Mellanby Ave., and this photo looks east from there. Highway 3A led down from Highway 3 via Mellanby Ave. and ended at Welland St./RR 68. Now, it leads down from RR 3, turns back up Welland St. and ends in a long loop. Highway 3 has been dropped in status, and RR 68 disappeared completely. Also, RR 5 was extended on a newish bridge to get onto "The Island" and meet 3A.

Across the Welland Canal. The other half of the canal forming "The Island" is the former route, originally constructed to avoid blasting the canal through bedrock but cutting a more circuitous route. It's no longer possible to boat the whole thing, but it's probably safe to head up to the old lock at RR 3. The Welland Canals Parkway is related to Welland Canal Pkwy. (no reckoning for the missing/added 's'), but there's a considerable distance through Thorold and Welland to get it down to this sign. Interim status is likely to continue for quite awhile.

Looking north at the bridge. That big structure you may have noticed to the right of the bridge appears to be a lock signal supplementing the little one in the middle of the span. Unlike most drawbridges, this is a single lift span; when the weight drops on the west side, the entire bridge raises up over it.
