Bergen CR numbers

This page is a work in progress. It is now clear that there were two types of county routes - a primary system (numbered 1-17) and a secondary (25 and up). The secondary system appears to have started, in concept, as a series of 1xx routes to fill in the county system. At some point, this was superseded by the more modern secondary system, the one that was actually posted in the field (for the most part), and which may or may not overlay the primary system (SLD says yes, field signs say no). The more we learn, the weirder it gets. Perhaps the clearest source I've had yet is a 1970 Hagstrom that says the secondary numbers are going to be posted that very year - and does not show any primary overlap. I also have a PDF fragment of the original primary system plan labeling them as NS-1 to NS-8 and EW-1 to EW-6 (with NW-1 for kicks); the map cuts off the south and east sides so I have to guess at the rest. I know that, for the most part, this primary system was posted decades ago because the numbers I've seen in the field agree with these sources. Here's what they show:

I want to add some notes on the system shown in this Hagstrom map. I get the feeling there is some carryover to the official Bergen map referenced below; for example, CR 28 is shown as 130 in both places. The official Bergen map may have mixed the more modern system and the original proposal. There is also a new renumbering that has changed a lot, relatively recently, and I aim to someday get that information to you too.

All remaining information on this page is courtesy SPUI. This page is an attempt to catalog different sources of Bergen County's route numbering. Presumably, the SLD (first column) numbers are the most accurate for the present-day route numbers, though SLD errors do often exist, and the "official" Bergen numbers are closer to what you'll find in the field. "Bergen map" refers to the official Bergen County map, or at least the one they present to those who request one, though the latest editions do not have route numbers.
