Missouri/Illinois Roads - M.L.K. Bridge/old US 66

Martin Luther King Bridge, former US 66

Looking west from Missouri.

WB over a few railroad tracks in Illinois (the first, small truss) and into Missouri on the M.L.K. Bridge, named for the famous King, Jr. and not his reverend father, yet mysteriously omitting the suffix. This was briefly an alignment of US 66, which bridge-hopped almost everywhere in St. Louis (except the nearby Eads Bridge). I would love to see the former signs mounted on the truss entrance on those rusty hangers.

Looking south as I cross the bridge at the parallel Eads Bridge, whose arches mirror the nearby Gateway Arch, and in the distance, the trusses of the MacArthur Bridge, another alignment of former US 66 and now just a railroad bridge. The roadway level closed in the 1980s but the road deck was only removed in 2007.

Down to the St. Louis waterfront on Sullivan Blvd., looking northeast.
